Story COMMON ERRORS FOUND IN ONLINE FAMILY TREES FOR PHILIP QUIGLEY (Dec 13, 2018)  [37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42

    • I have recently been researching the immediate family of Philip Quigley, who resided in Nottingham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, British America, from about 1720 to 1751. Philip was my 6th GGFather. I would like to correct two common errors that I have seen replicated from one family tree to another at several online genealogy sites, including Ancestry, MyHeritage and FamilySearch. Typically, there are no sources given for this information, which I believe to be incorrect, other than someone else's family tree. Sources for my corrections are included herein.

      Philip Quigley's Occupation
Philip's occupation is handwritten on the marriage license of Sep 28, 1733, for him and his second wife, Mary Pearson. As shown on the attached image, his occupation should be interpreted as "stavegetter," not "slavegetter," as is commonly stated in many online family trees. This interpretation of the potentially confusing handwriting is consistent with just a few online family trees, all of which, I suspect, obtained their information from the marriage license and from the Charles R. Hutchinson Collection, kept at the New Jersey Historical Society Library and available online at an LDS family history center. Hutchinson stated that "Philip Quigley was a laborer employed on the Pearson plantation, chiefly in the conversion of timber into barrel staves, which were at that time an important article of commerce."

Philip Quigley's Relationship to Daniel Quigley
Many online family trees show Daniel Quigley and his wife Susannah Yerto, also of Nottingham Twp., as being Philip's parents, probably stemming from a Philip Quigley (2) being named as a Daniel's son in his will of Apr 18, 1759, and from the first version (1911) of Hutchinson's family record for the Pearsons (p. 113). I believe this to be incorrect, and that Daniel is more likely to have been Philip's brother, for the following reasons:
o Daniel's will is dated 1759, Philip is believed to have died (or disappeared) by 1751, when his wife, Mary Pearson, had remarried Jonathan Knipe.
o Daniel's will names Philip (2) as one of his six youngest children," which is inconsistent with Philip having been married about 1724 to his first wife, Hannah Prickett.
o Daniel's will was witnessed by Jonathan Knipe, who at that time was married to Mary (Pearson) Quigley, Philip's second wife; i.e., Daniel's probable ex-sister-in-law.
o Philip and Daniel are said to been brothers from Ireland, who immigrated to Philadelphia in the 1720s, with a third brother, James, who settled in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
o Hutchinson's last version (1917-1919) of the Pearson family record makes no reference to Daniel being Philip's father. In fact, even within his first version, but on a later page (114), he states, "But instead of this Daniel being the father of the Philip Quigley who married Mary Pearson, I think him more likely to have been his brother …"

Note: As I continue to research these related families, I plan to update this document as appropriate.

    Dog Town

    • The Quigleys were among those who settled here
in the early part of the eighteenth century. Some
of them were noted deer hunters. They kept many
dogs for hunting purposes, and the cluster of houses
on the road from White Horse to Sandtown (Mercerville), called
"Dogtown," was so named on account of the large
number of dogs kept by the Quigleys resident there.
