In 1832, he assisted Elder Calvin H. Swayne in the first improvements within the present limits of Columbia Twp. (which was set off from Napolean Twp. in 1839), near the present site of Brooklyn, at first called Swaynesville. The Quigley family made their settlement at Napolean. Louisa M. Swain taught the first school, in 1833, at the house of Samuel Quigley.
