Cayuga Joint Stock Company of 1849
    • On Apr 25, 1883, Weston A. Ogden read a paper (attached) before the Cayuga County Historical Society, describing the Cayuga Joint Stock Company of 1849. He, along with 78 others, had paid $500 into the Company, whose objective was "to engage in mining, trading and such other business in the territory of California, and at such other places as shall be deemed by the Company for the best interests of the same."

      The paper describes:

o The Company articles of association.
o The purchase of a ship, the barque, Belvidere, to transport the men, equipment and supplies from New York City to San Francisco, via Cape Horn.
o Leaving New York City on Mar 2, 1849.
o Rounding Cape Horn on June 23rd.
o 1st landfall at Callao, Peru; July 29th; returned to sea; August 7th.
o Landing at San Francisco; October 8th, after 212 days shipboard.
o Spending several weeks in San Francisco, working at odd jobs to make money for the common fund.
o An initial party of 19 men, who went to the Mariposa mines, via Stockton, and worked fairly successfully until the spring of 1850 before returning to San Francisco.
o The Company in San Francisco had disintegrated from sickness, death, and men leaving for other ventures; only part having gone into the mines.
o In April, at the 1st annual meeting, a vote was taken to dissolve the Company, which had not been a financial success. Having paid in $500, only about $300 were returned in dividends.
o Ogden then formed a party with 3 other men to return to the mines. They worked on the Bear River for 3 months, before moving to the Big Auburn ravine at Ophir, 3 miles from Auburn. He describes how they lived and mined until 1853, when he returned home to Cayuga Co., NY.
o The names of the men of the Company are listed, along with their current location in 1883, where known.

      Ogden concluded with:

o "I know of no one in our party who became suddenly rich, or made a fortune in three or four years."
o "We were boys then, with our hearts filled with bright dreams and golden hopes."
