The Charles R. Hutchinson Collection contains approximately 500 items that were collected by the businessman and local historian, Charles Hutchinson, 1838-1927. This collection, which spans the years 1788-1927, contains indentures of Monmouth County families; letters to Ida M. Tarbell about Monmouth County; articles and a membership list of the Sober Society of Allentown, 1895, a temperance organization; returns of births and deaths in Monmouth and Mercer counties, retained by Dr. Archibald Alexander Howell as attending physician, 1878-90. A long-time resident of Allentown, Hutchinson operated a general store before entering the real-estate and insurance business. He wrote about twenty books on genealogy and local history, none of which was published. (Source: Catalog of original documents at the New Jersey

dogs for hunting purposes, and the cluster of houses
on the road from White Horse to Sandtown, called
"Dogtown," was so named on account of the large
number of dogs kept by the Quigleys resident there.

The Quigleys, who settled between White horse and Mercerville [Sandtown], were another early family. The Quigleys were noted deer hunters and because they had so many dogs the spot they settled was known as Dog Town.
[Although I have attributed the "Dogtown" stories about where the Quigleys lived to Philip Quigley, his son Isaac is the first to have records showing land ownershhip in this part of Nottingham Twp.]

The marriage of Marey [sic] Pearson to this person, who, besides being so far beneath her in social position, did not even bear a good reputation, was very distasteful to her relatives, and there was but little after-intercourse between the families.
